CORN HUSK
MATERIAL EXPLORATION
Self Initiative | III weeks
This study explores the potential of corn husk an abundant agro waste generated from India’s 27.8 million MT maize production (2018–19) as a sustainable alternative for handmade paper. With agro waste in India reaching 600 million tons annually and traditional papermaking requiring 17 trees per ton of paper, this research demonstrates how corn husk’s 30–50% cellulose content can effectively replace wood based fibers through natural binders and alkali pulping. This approach supports eco friendly production while reducing environmental strain from deforestation and waste accumulation.
